website design guide

When people think about web design, what comes to mind is usually the fonts, colors, and overall website layout. While these are essential web design elements, it is just a fraction of what web designers work to achieve.

Businesses need websites that will actively market their brand with good user experience, optimized content, and strong quality backlinks, to name a few. As such, more than just focusing on its appearance, designers work hard to make sure that the functionality is flawless for their clients. Doing so will ensure that your website looks good and serves your target audience well!

To help in that regard, here are five important elements to remember when building a site with excellent web design in mind:

1 - Maintain creative simplicity

Although functional design gets your audience to stay on your website, the way it looks will be the first thing that attracts them; as such, it’s important to nail this right off the bat!

Generally, simple designs work best because they allow for the focal points of your website to shine. For example, your landing page can be bare except for one medium-sized photo and a caption with a link. The simple design draws the user’s eye to the only objects on the page, making it an effective design.

The content of your website also matters. Use language that’s easy to understand, and do not waste any words; everything should be relevant. And while simplicity is crucial to your website’s effectiveness, it does not mean you should design it to be bland or boring. Keep it simple, but be creative and engaging at the same time.

2 - Ensure that navigation is easy and intuitive

Part of a website’s effectiveness is how its navigation is designed. People will have an easier time visiting all of your pages if the navigation bar or menu is straightforward and intuitive. Site visitors should never have to wonder how to get to certain parts of the website, so make sure that it’s consistent across all your pages to avoid any confusion or getting lost.

3 - Know how to use white space and choose your colors

White space—also called blank space—helps your page look neat and clean, allowing you to strike a balance between page elements. Not only does this help with the placement of your page content to create focus and attention, but it also helps it become more readable, as it gives the eyes a chance to rest when needed.

Choosing the right colors for your website entails doing a little bit of research on complementary shades and emotions that evoke. To avoid tiring out the reader’s eyes, choose shades that are easy to look at. A good rule to follow is to choose two to three colors and play around with the shades to add variety.

4 - Utilize quality and optimized content

While your website’s appearance and user interface initially attract people, what makes them stay and engage with your business is the content they read, watch, and view. As such, your content should be clear and value-adding, or else, customers won’t bother sticking around! Try to make your articles, blog posts, videos, and images as engaging as possible while clearly delivering the message of your brand.

Another crucial element of good content is proper optimization. Your website and its content can be the best in the vicinity, but if nobody finds it on their search engines and social media, then it won’t be very effective for the business. Make sure your site is designed to show up where it counts!

5 - Focus on faster loading times

Fast loading times are important from a user experience standpoint since it could mean the difference between a site visitor staying and leaving. Having a slower website may even affect your rankings on search engines.

By balancing your web pages’ elements, you can keep it running quickly and smoothly for optimal user experience.

These 5 simple tips will put you on the path to creating a well designed, SEO friendly, and user friendly website.
